History:
India INS Arihant Submarine (SSBN-80) is India’s first indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), marking a major step in the country’s defense strategy. Developed under the secretive Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) program, the project began in the late 1990s to complete India’s nuclear triad — the ability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea. After years of collaboration among the Indian Navy, DRDO, and BARC, India INS Arihant Submarine (SSBN-80) was launched in 2009 and commissioned in 2016.
The submarine is powered by an 83 MW pressurized water reactor and displaces around 6,000 tons. It can carry up to 12 K-15 short-range or 4 K-4 intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Designed for stealth and underwater endurance, India INS Arihant Submarine (SSBN-80) provides India with a secure second-strike capability, reinforcing its “No First Use” nuclear policy. It also features advanced sonar and communication systems to support long-range deterrence patrols.
Since entering service, India INS Arihant Submarine (SSBN-80) has completed successful missile trials and deterrence patrols. It plays a critical role in India’s nuclear posture and maritime defense. Additional Arihant-class submarines are under construction, forming the core of India’s future SSBN fleet and enhancing its strategic deterrent in the Indo-Pacific region.
